Halter rubbed hair off face, will it grow back?

Got a new horse last week, 10yr old Arabian geld. Previous owners left him out to pasture with his halter on 24/7 and it has rubbed a lot of hair off of his face. I am wondering if it will grow back? He was pastured with other horses who beat him up and he has some knicks and cuts. I am medicating them but will they always be visible? I am not going to show him or anything, just a country girl that rides around on my ranch so looks arent a big deal but just wondering if it will grow back and if there is something I can do to help it. Thanks!

If the rubbing was strong enough to damage the skin UNDER the top layers, he may not grow any more hair. I would hazard a guess, though, that she may grow some hair on his face. The neck -- that's definitely a "wait and see." Ointment should help as much as anything can, since, again, you want to minimize the scar tissue and maximize the amount of healthy, supple skin.

Sometimes it takes quite a long time for hair to grow back where there has been an injury -- it can take several months or even longer. Whether some, or all, or any of the hair returns or not will depend on the nature and extent of the injury -- permanent hair loss occurs whenever the hair follicle is destroyed and scar tissue is formed.

If there is no skin infection, and the follicles themselves (the skin tissue surrounding the roots of individual hairs) are still present, there may be regrowth in time. I suggest using ointments

Wow, what a beautiful horse!!

Poor guy to have a halter on all the time.

Yes, the fur will eventually grow back. It might take a while, but it'll grow in.

You can help by not leaving his halter on alot, which I'm sure you won't do!!!

Good luck!

I depends on whether or not the hair follicles have been damaged. Leaving the halter off will probably help as long as there has not been any scarring. The other nicks and cuts, that's hard to say, again, depends on how deep, infection, etc. My horses always seem to have a nick from arguing, and 99.9% of the time, it heals without any visible scar, the hair grows back. I recommend not leaving the halter on the horse when turning it out as they can also get it caught and can hurt or kill themselves. If it's been left on because he's a stinker to catch, just work with him, that'll help a lot.

Yes....it should eventually grow back it may take awhile.

Well if he was a neglected horse, he could have what is called mange or another type of parasitic mite. You should talk to a vet and have them do a skin biopsy.

can't really say i had a horse who a vet shaved some hair off for some strange reason it grew back but took time i also gave her a body shave it helped good luck to you

i don't see why anyone would want to neglect a beautiful horse like that !!!!!!!!!!!! I wish people would smarten up about things like that. Don't you? The fur will definitely grow back on his face it takes a little while but it will if you don't bother it to much. About the cuts, it depends on his color. I had a black horse once that got tangled in barbed wire and had cuts every where but as soon as they healed it was like they were never there. Although i have an appaloosa that every time she gets a cut it leaves white scars. but its not looks that matter right? Its the horse.............

It depends on how much the skin was damaged. Most likely it will, but it will take a very long time. It will probably also grow back with white hair if the area isn't all ready white.

You can also use some Vitamin E oil on the area to help with any possible scarring.

Just do what you're doing by keeping the halter off and I'd suggest getting a leather halter. It's less abrasive and keep it loose. Good luck!

you should get MTG it is called mane tail growth. it is a big bottle with yellow stuff and it smells like sulfur, but it works really good.

This is a very common problem. It happens to my horses at the barn too. Mine just loose hairs on their around their eyes and stuff. The hair will grow back. Just try to keep the halter off as much as possible. What you could do is get halter fleeces as well. Now for the wounds or what ever they are from being beat up, the hair should grow back. it will just grow back white because it grew back scar tissue that turns the hair white. A lot of horses have scars on their backs from saddles and on their faces from bridles. Some horses have scars on the side of their mouths from the bit. I have even seen scars on the side of the horses side from spurs. =( Also keep his face really clean. Constintly use wet wipes or towels to keep it clean. You can also brush it often.

Yes it will grow back but make sure you keep the halter off..its dangerous to have one haltered in a pasture.

Our own horses have had hair rubbed off on their face and it grew right back, so I think that you don't have to worry about it, in a few weeks you probably wont be able to see it.

Halter rubbed hair off face, will it grow back?

Answer is yes. The hair will grow back. All you have to do is leave the halter off until you see the hair begin to grow back on his face. also, you may want to put some fleece on the nose band and side straps, just in case you need to leave the halter on. the fleece will be comfortable for your horse. also, it will leave time for the hair to grow back on his face, without rubbing. just make sure there is no burs, or small bits of twigs, or small insects on the fleece so that the horse doesn't get cuts or scratches, or just gets irritated at the feeling and end up rubbing the fur off his face. Hope I helped!

i've been with horses most of my life and don't worry- the lil cuts wont show forever... there might be a slight change in hair colour... kinda like what we call scars, but it wont be too noticable.

remove the halter from him for a while, the hair should start to grow back gradually but a gain, there might be a little mark left. if you dont want to remove the halter, why not buy one of those super soft ones? their REALLY handy... ooh, and take him away from the bully horses, that can't be good... hope he gets better soon! good luck! xxx

Most likely it will grow back if you take care of the problem quickly but then again some horses don't-- This is just caused by the halter rubbing, it doesnt mean its too tight or too loose or anything, maybe your new horse just has a sensitive face like mine does! Just put some white fuzzy things on the noseband of the halter for cushion and it will prevent it from happening again =)

Halter rubbed hair off face, will it grow back?

That means that the Halter is way to tight and Yes the hair will come back it might take it a while but it will come back

Halter rubbed hair off face, will it grow back?

Yes, the hair will grow back. You need to keep the halter off of him and only use it when you need to. I also would keep it clean from sweat and dirt, this will stop him from rubbing his head on anything to make it worse. If the spot is sore, use preparation H. I know that sounds weird but it really works. I hope this helps.

That's happened ot my horses a few times. As soon as oyu notice it, put an antibacterial, such as Neosporn, or if the horse is white then put diaper rash cream (yes, diaper rash cream), such as Desetin on it. It iwll just heal the skin and hopefully grow the fur back. Continue to put the Neosporn/Desetin on the affected area until it begins to heal. I would suggets putting wool covers on the halters and loosening them.

I raise miniature donkeys last yr we got a jenny that had her halter left on her 24/7 by the previous owners. it was so bad that she had calious wore on her chin. she also had lots of hair loss on her body where she had been rubbing on things. now here face as all the hair back on it and the calious healed up. the hair missing from her rear end and back also grew back. and she enternly greatful to us that she doesn't have to wear that halter any more. it was so bad that the buckles had rusted shut and you could barely get it off her.

your horse sounds very pretty. glad you got her.

I have an Arab mare who is thin coated. The hair on her face is so thin, that she has mostly colored skin from her eyes down. When I leave a halter on her, I think the heat from the nylon makes the hair fall out, so that she ends up with the outline of a halter on her face and it takes a year to grow back. As far as the rest of the marks, they will probably grow out and you will have a horse that is all one color.

My Appaloosa and my Quarter horse had these halter marks when i got them...the hair never grew back, but on a Quarter Horse mare I used to own, the hair did grow back.

try bacon grease daily on the rubbed, or bare places on the horses body. I have used this and the hair grows back. It will usually grow back the horses natural color not white.
